Virtual Cocoon Security
And just when you thought there's nothing else to say about the breakthroughs of the Virtual Cocoon!
If you haven't heard about it (shame on you
), it's a project revealed by the scientists of the Warwick University on March 4th, aiming to produce a helmet-like portable virtual device recreating the experience of all five senses. People who stand behind this little revolution, and willing to commercialize it within 3-5 years, go as far as saying that they are on the way of developing the "Real Virtuality".
I stumbled upon this security review of the thing on the UW Computer Security Research and Course Blog. It covers everything from possible human health and sanity issues, up to more common personal data considerations. You can find out what security risks are to expect when dealing with chemicals necessary to provide the smell and taste sensations, or get aware of the weaknesses of the helmet receiving data wirelessly.
Besides being genuinely interesting, apparently profound and well done, I liked the underlying critic approach : sure it's cool, but let's right away try to dissect it and get back to the ground. Security first!
Worth having a look.
