VR on mobile devices with V-Gate's Metaport
Here is another thing coming out on the ongoing GDC (March 23-27).
V-Gate, a division of Scientific Computers, presented today an innovative procedure for transmitting 3D contents to mobile devices. The official name of this patented system is Metaport, but they use to call it Virtual Reality to go.
Accordingly to the press release, in details it goes like this :
The Metaport server is positioned between an online platform and the user. A soft client is installed on the mobile device. The Metaport server computes objects and textures of a three-dimensional world into a format which only required a fraction of the usual bandwidth. The client stays connected to Metaport and renders the scene by means of its own 3D accelerator and the textures and objects provided by the server. In case of bandwidth bottlenecks or interrupted connections, it falls back to the scene stored on the mobile device.
In principle - nothing revolutionary. But in practice this could show to be a big step forward towards adapting virtual reality applications for mobile devices. And, let's be honest : no one knows what potentials lie beyond!
