DIVA - how to put VR in a DB
That user interfaces is one of the fields where we might expect virtual reality techniques to shine the most is a story very well known. Need examples to prove it? Here's one!
Everyone who ever worked on a large database knows what a struggle it is to understand its organization and architecture. Let alone to safely undertake an action towards modifying anything. VRM, a development team from Ukraine, is proposing DIVA, or Database Immersive Visual Analysis.
After several years of gathering experience and work, they came up with a solution that connects to conventional DB systems (Oracle, MySQL), and helps users to exploit them through a fully immersive interface. Exploiting the third dimension allows easy manipulation with up to now inaccessible features (example given - reference tables. See the interview with creators in the original post), and the immersion insures a better memorization and a higher level of understanding.
The product is available in a free (25 tables only), a commercial and a VR versions (prices are more than fairly low), the latest supporting Vuzix VR920 native head tracking and P5 data glove for gesture-based input. Don't hesitate to visit the web-site for more information and videos explaining the concept more in depth.
